About

The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers was founded on 2 November 1953 and inaugurated by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, then Vice-President of India. It is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, and has its headquarters at 2, Institutional Area, Lodhi Road, New Delhi.

The Institution is devoted to the advancement of science and technology in electronics, telecommunication, computers, information technology and related disciplines. The Government of India recognises it as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and as an Institute of National Eminence. Its membership now exceeds 1,25,000, served through more than sixty centres and sub-centres in India and abroad.

The Institution also conducts its own examinations. DipIETE is equivalent to a three-year diploma, AMIETE to a four-year bachelor’s degree, and ALCCS to a postgraduate M.Tech-level qualification. Together these have provided a rigorous alternative route into the profession for working technicians and engineers studying while in employment.

The Chennai Centre was established in 1955, two years after the Institution itself, and serves members across Chennai and the surrounding districts from its office at Gopalapuram. It is the point at which the Institution’s national programme meets the city’s own engineering community — its colleges, its research groups, and its electronics, communications and information technology industry.

Through the year the Centre convenes technical talks and expert lectures, runs short-term courses and workshops, supports IETE Students’ Forums in engineering institutions, hosts conferences including the CHENCON series, and represents its members in the affairs of the Institution.

The Centre is governed by an Executive Committee elected by its members for a two-year term. The committee for 2026–2028 took office under the chairmanship of Dr. D. Vijendra Babu.

1. To promote and advance the study of electronics, telecommunication, computers, information technology and allied subjects.
2. To convene conferences, seminars, symposia and exhibitions for the exchange of technical knowledge.
3. To provide a forum in which engineers, academics and researchers may meet and work together.
4. To conduct examinations and continuing-education programmes that widen entry to the profession.
5. To publish journals, technical reviews and proceedings of professional value.
6. To offer an informed professional view on national policy in technology and technical education.
7. To recognise outstanding professional and academic achievement through awards and fellowships.
8. To encourage research and development, and to support young engineers entering the field.
